Five geeky things you may, or may not, know about me!

So by the title of my blog, you may have guessed that I'm a bit of a geek.  I'm also British, which means I have a tendency to understate things.  This means that me being 'a bit' of a geek means that I am so geeky, The Big Bang Theory is more like a documentary to me than a comedy (except for the science part; I'm a creative geek, not a science geek!).  So here's five geeky things you might not know about me!

Narsil; taller than a small child, but harder to swing!
1)  I own a sword!  Yes, indeed I do!  It's a Bastard sword, which doesn't mean it's of questionable parentage, it means that it's two handed and as such, is 4ft long!  It's not just any sword though!  Any psycho with a lust for blades can own a sword.  My sword is a replica of Narsil; the sword of Elendil, King of the Dunedain, which was broken when he took on Sauron and whose broken hilt was used to cut the One Ring off Sauron's hand by Isildur.  For those not in the know, it's a replica of a sword featured in The Silmarillion and The Lord of the Rings both of which are fantasy novels written by JRR Tolkien.  If you haven't read The Lord of the Rings yet, then you should!  It's my most favourite book ever!

Tabletop gaming.  Serious shit.
2)  I used to (and probably still would) Role play.  So, how to explain this one to those who don't know what it is...hmmm.  Okay, so you know Dungeons and Dragons, right?  Well, it's like that, only not...but it is.  An easier way to explain it is to say that it involves sitting around a table with your friends, pretending to be someone else and enjoying every minute of it!  If I had to give you a reason why I enjoy it, I would say that it's really good in helping you keep a good imagination and getting those creative juices flowing!  It's like in years gone by when folks used to sit around a fire and make up stories together, so kind of a lost art really.  Whatever it is, I used to love it!  I had some of the best times of my youth pretending to be anything from a vampire to a starship captain and a whole host of stuff in between.  The mahoosive collection of Role playing books I have is testament to my love for this stuff!

Zombies.  No concept of queueing.
3)  I am obsessed with zombies!  It's true! I love these squishy, decomposing ex humans with all of my heart!  I've been known to talk about zombies so much, my friends have wished for a zombie apocalypse to happen just because they know I'd be so happy (until I inevitably got bitten and turned into one of the shambling horrors!  Still, who'd know the difference, right!?).  At the moment, I am in love with the TV series The Walking Dead.  If you haven't seen this yet, you really need to because it's one of the best things I've seen for ages!  I don't know what it is about zombies that I love.  It might be the fact that anyone has a chance to survive, as long as they're the slow shambling types and not the more modern running zombies (how cool are they though!?).  It might just be the fact that they're horrifically gooey and have so many comedy ways that they can die (again).  Whatever the reason, I love the messy bastards!

If you were me, you'd be excited too!
4)  I get overly excited about video games.    Computer games.  I've loved them ever since my mum and dad brought home an Atari 2600 and the Empire Strikes Back game for it.  I've grown up with them and seen them evolve in ways that are breathtaking!  They've moved from bouncing a white block around a screen to full blown blockbusters costing millions of pounds to make and telling amazing, epic stories!  They are astounding!  The one I'm really looking forward to at the moment is Mass Effect 3.  This beauty is released in March and completes a trilogy of frankly awesome games telling the tale of one humans' (in my case, a woman, Joanna Shepherd) struggle to save the galaxy from some massive robots.  It's been an epic ride and I can't wait to get my hands on the last chapter!  Also, we've not had a decent Indiana Jones game for ages!  Pull your finger out Lucasarts!!

So now you know!
5)  I know what Bussard Ramscoops are.  Star Trek.  Are you truly a geek if you don't like Star Trek?  I'm not so sure.  I definitely love Star Trek (my favourite is Deep Space Nine, but I love all the series in their own special way!) and feel that my geekiness really shines through when I mention Ramscoops.  See, loads of people know little bits about the series, I mean, we practically use PADDS on a day to day basis in the modern world!  Don't believe me?  I need only say one word; iPads.  Ramscoops on the other hand are the type of obscurae of which only a true fan would know!  For those interested in what they are, they are the red bits on the front of a Federation ships nacelles (nacelles being the 'wingy' bits, like on the Enterprise).  They collect hydrogen, especially deuterium, for fuel replenishment, but can be reconfigured to collect various gases like sirillium and plasma particles.  So there you go, I know you'll sleep easier tonight knowing that!

So there you have it!  Five things that make me a geek that you may not have known about me!  I've no idea what these five facts say about me, but they do help to define who I am as a person and mark me as a card carrying geek.  Not that I do carry a card saying that I'm a geek.  That's going too far! :-)

Speak at you later, folks!

Kenny
